Bipolar disorder is a condition which causes individuals to experience periods of mania contrasted to periods of depression. Symptoms individuals encounter during a manic state may include impulsive behaviors, flight of ideas, increased spending, increased libido, pressured speech, feeling jumpy or high energy, decreased need for sleep, and feel a since of grandiosity. Individuals experiencing a depressed state may experience increased need for sleep, lower libido, change in appetite, low energy, disinterest and low motivation. These shifts can be disorienting to the person experiencing these changes as well as the people in their lives. This can cause distress and impact functioning in a number of ways. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you may work with a therapist to build insight into understanding these internal shifts and to increase skills used to manage the impact these shifts have on decision making and functioning giving clients a renewed sense of empowerment.
